Diverting water to Balochistan could not save Jacobabad

SUKKUR The Sindh government has issued final warning for the people to leave Jacobabad as raging floodwaters started entering the city Sunday evening from three sides. Shahbaz Airbase of Jacobabad has also been vacated by all foreign and other staff due to the flood threat. Putting another historical city Shikarpur under red zone, the provincial government cut the railway track at Lodra, diverting floodwater of Begari Feeder to the other side to save the city from inundation. After breaking the railway track, the floodwater has submerged the Jacobabad-Shikarpur road, resulting in suspension of traffic. Meanwhile, despite the resistance by former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali, the district government Jacobabad caused two artificial breaches in Noorwah at Jacobabad-Quetta bypass on Sunday morning and diverted the water to Balochistan. But the swelling floodwater has reached railway line Jacobabad, which increased danger of inundation of the city. DPO Jacobabad Pervez Chandio said the district government had decided to cut additional five places in Noorwah with aim to divert the water flow towards Balochistan, while machinery has also been moved to Jacobabad-Quetta bypass for this purpose. The people of the area told TheNation that the water diverted to Balochistan was returning back towards Sindh areas from other points with additional saline water of Balochistan. Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo during a Press conference in Sukkur said the present government and other institutions of national security were trying to save Jacobabad and Shikarpur from inundation, but floodwater is constantly flowing towards Jacobabad from three sides. He pointed out that diverting water pressure through cut in Noorwah at Jacobabad-Quetta bypass proved less beneficial than expectations. He warned that remaining people who are stranded should leave the city immediately because cities could be built later but there is no any irreparable/compensation of human loss. He said that breaches occurred in the embankment of Indus River at Bhong area of Punjab near Kashmore has been plugged while efforts were on to plug other four breaches. He pointed out that land communication between Sindh and Punjab could be disconnected, if remaining breaches were not plugged soon. He said that land and rail communication between Sindh and Balochistan was already disconnected. Beside irrigation, engineering corps of Army was also involved in operation to plug the breach in Indus River at Tori Embankment, which caused inundation of Ghauspur, Karampur, Thul and hundreds of villages of Jacobabad and Kashmore districts. He said the super flood of over one million cusecs will remain in Indus River till next 10 to 15 days as another flood of about one million will reach Sindh at Guddu Barrage within a week. Terming the flood record-breaking catastrophe, he said figures of the flood affectees are increasing every hour as more areas are inundating, displacing more people. He added presently at least 80,000 affectees are staying in relief camps in Sukkur, while thousands of families have migrated to safer places in other cities. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah along with Federal Minister for Sports Mir Aijaz Jakhrani and provincial ministers visited Jacobabad. Jakhrani informed the CM about the viable options to divert water flow to save the city. He also informed the CM about Zafarullah Jamalis rigid attitude of resisting the cut in Noorwah. The CM also directed the Sindh Chief Secretary to set up a camp at Jacobabad to devise strategy to save this historical city from inundation. However, talking to media on phone, Mir Zafarullah Jamali alleged that Aijaz Jakhrani was responsible for inundation of Dera Allahyar, Jaffarabad and other towns and villages of Balochistan. Referring to Shahbaz Airbase, which was used by American and its allied forces in war against Taliban, Jamali said Jakhrani diverted the floodwater towards Balochistan only to save the foreigners. Meanwhile, continuous increase in floodwater is posing a constant threat to Shahdadkot, Ratodero, Naudero, Wagn, Garhi Yasin and other towns of upper Sindh. The miseries of affectees are compounding as majority of them are staying alongside the roads near cities like Sukkur, Khairpur, Naushehro Feroze without any relief. People particularly children are sick as families have no milk, water and other food items for children. Besides, Chairman Baitul Maal Zamurd Khan speaking at a Press conference in Sukkur said 100 trucks carrying raw food items for 25,000 families have been brought at Sukkur. The government has allocated Rs500 million for flood affectees, out of which Rs100 million are to be provided to Sindh. Muhammad Mehboob from Sukkur adds: The flow of floodwater at Sukkur Barrage on upstream was 10,10,357 cusecs and downstream 9,75,087 cusecs and flow of floodwater was increasing, while flow of floodwater at Guddu Barrage up & downstream was steadily 10,41,790 cusecs since noon and flow of floodwater at Kotri Barrage on upstream was 2,46,315 cusecs and downstream 2,23,851 cusecs, according to irrigation sources of Sukkur.
