LAHORE The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has resented the resolution passed by a full court of the Supreme Court for the appointment of Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday and Justice (r) Rehmat Jafri as ad hoc judges for a year. SCBA President Asma Jahangir told a press conference Tuesday that the bars across the country were showing strong resentment. She said that by adopting a resolution for re-appointment of judges, the judges have somewhat taken a political step and as such lawyers would handle it politically. Asma said there should be a difference between a trade union and the judiciary. She said such acts did not suit the judiciary being contrary to its own decisions. Asma said one should practice what one preaches. She also demanded the government not to adopt the policy of leniency in making appointments of judges. She said although the resolution passed by the full court has no legal authority nor could it make the appointments, the judges should think before taking such steps. She said she herself avoided uttering such words that could hurt the feelings of the judiciary but in this matter one of the beneficiary judges was also present in the meeting, and such steps do not suit the judges. She said there were so many references pending in the bars. She said the ad hoc judge could only be appointed in case of emergency when there was a dire need for more judges. She said appointing a judge on an ad hoc basis would ruin the image of the judiciary.
