Unregistered SIMs main cause of law, order: Talha

ISLAMABAD - "Unregistered or unverified SIMs are the major factor in deteriorating law and order situation in the country," said Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Senator Talha Mehmood here on Thursday.    He said that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) should show responsibility in this regard and should ask the mobile phone operators to verify all connection, issued so far, and not issue any further number without proper documentation. "These connections were being used in illegal and criminal activates so that a vibrant strategy be chalked out for issuance of the new connections to help reduce the crime rate," he uttered. He described that the issue needs immediate attention of the concerned govt authorities. He expressed the opinion that so far the cellular companies have turned a deaf ear to the issue and confirmation drive still needed to be launched in full swing to cover each and every district. He further said that some mobile companies have launched a drive for registration of the unverified SIMs through SMS, which is extremely ridiculous step as the SIM user can send any body's ID card number for registration. He said people should be asked to visit the authorized franchise to confirm their registration and proper documentation of the connections. "Only then the matters could be streamlined in a better way and make the campaign against unverified SIMs a success," he added.
