LAHORE - Expressing his distrust over the way government is being run in Punjab, Governor Salman Taseer has written two more letters on different issues to Chief Minister. In these letters, it has been stressed that the government in the province is not working according to the law and Constitution; cabinet has not been completed in a period of eight months; new parliamentary secretaries have not been appointed; Cabinet meetings are not being held for months while it should be held every week as laid down in the Constitution; and that the government is making a mockery of the parliament by running business through secretaries. In one letter it has been said that the Chief Minister is bound to keep the Governor's House informed about the steps taken by him but all this is not being done. In an other letter, the Governor has drawn the attention of the Chief Minister to the locking up of courts by the lawyers asking him (CM) why no action has been taken in this regard. Nobody can be permitted to influence the courts and if the government ignores such activities, the attitude of the government stands contrary to the law and Constitution, the Governor said. It is pertinent to recall here that the Governor had already written some letters to the Chief Minister on different issues such as registration of a murder case against a doctor and students protest at GCU. The tide of epistles from the Governor to the Chief Minister is being considered alarming for the Punjab Government. Our Monitoring Desk adds: Governor Punjab Salman Taseer has said that Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League-N should go forward jointly in a greater national interest, as their efforts will strengthen democracy in the country. In an interview with Waqt TV channel aired on Sunday, Salman said that the Punjab coalition government should boost coordination and work for betterment of people of the province. He ruled out the impression that he was interfering in Punjab government affairs. He said that the PPP MPAs would quit from Punjab government if the PML-N started to create forward blocs or tried to break the PML-Q. "I'll ask Chief Minister Punjab for the vote of confidence which is my constitutional right. The PML-N will have to show the required numbers in Punjab Assembly. Failing which, their government will collapse." He alleged that each MPA who joined the PML-N was given Rs40 to Rs50 million. He said that the PPP believed in the politics of reconciliation and had established coalition governments in provinces. However, he admitted that he didn't have a specific working relationship with Punjab Chief Minister. He said that local bodies system could be improved but could not be abolished. He said that the sitting local body system was working below the mark, because Punjab government's undue interference. To a question about PML-N reservations about his appointment by former President Pervez Musharraf, Salman said that Governor is appointed by the President on the advice of Prime Minister and, "If President Asif Zardari doesn't like me, I can be removed just by a single notification." He said that the PML-N was a Punjab party whereas the PPP a party of the whole country. If the PML-N is claiming to pursue a principle-based politics on the issue of judiciary, it should be followed in Punjab as well, he opined, adding that the issue of judiciary was no more an issue now. He said that one judge (Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry) was addressing the gatherings and his processions were being attended by the activists of the PML-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf. To another question, he ruled out the impression that the PPP's government was pursuing policies crafted by former President Pervez Musharraf. He said that there was a major difference that the military leadership briefed the civilian government first time in country's history. "Military actions are being backed by civilian leadership which is positive", he said, adding that army should not have any role in politics. He said that his party was a leadership gap after assassination of Benazir Bhutto last year. He said that terrorist who had removed her from the scene were now busy in spreading terrorism in the country. To a query about ongoing financial crisis, Governor Punjab said that support of International Monetary Fund was a good gesture and the people involved in financial scandal should be exposed and brought to the book.
