Confusion prevails in PTV

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Television Corporation is again in trouble as the rumours of its recently appointed Chairman/MD, Dr Shahid Masood's replacement have halted the healthy functioning of state-run TV channel. Reliable sources within PTV told The Nation that the rumours of Masood's dislodgment had become the most frequently discussed matter in the organisation, and was thus badly affecting the smooth sailing of the institution.      "After the heated debate on Masood's salary package in both upper and lower houses ended on the intervention of Senate Standing Committee on Information & Broadcasting, which had validated it. Now the issue of MD's replacement is being raised to hamper ongoing enhancement of PTV", said an official of PTV on condition of anonymity.     He said that some 'paranoiacs' in the state-run TV channel were spreading rumours for their vested interests. "Actually international audit company, KPMG that had been hired to conduct in-depth audit of the organization by Dr Shahid Masood, immediately after he took charge of his office, has finalized its report and it is for the fear of that report that is pushing these paranoiacs in the PTV to spread baseless rumors against MD", he added.   Well informed sources within PTV and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting told this scribe that some high-ups of the Ministry were at odds with MD, PTV and there were efforts underway to dislodge Dr Shahid Masood from the state-run TV channel's chairmanship. Another PTV employee requesting not to be named said that a renowned film actress was also lobbying hard to get Dr Shahid Masood dislodged from his post. "She is supporting Rashid Khawaja, former MD, NTM, but the efforts will surely end in fiasco", he claimed. All PTV Employees & Workers Union (CBA)'s Secretary General, Pervaiz Akhtar Bhatti talking to TheNation confirmed that the rumours of the replacement of PTV's chairman were rife in the organization, thus badly damaging the smooth functioning of the institution. "Dr Shahid Masood is a professional man, but he is not being allowed to work with concentration due to conflict between him and Information Ministry's high-ups", he stated. Liaqat Bangulzai, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Information & Broadcasting talking to this correspondent said that the Senate body had resolved the issue of Dr Shahid Masood's salary package in its meeting and had also asked the government to give appropriate time to new Chairman/MD to run the channel on new lines. "I am unaware of rumours regarding PTV Chairman's replacement but personally feel that Dr Shahid Masood should use his capabilities to revamp the organization", Bangulzai said, adding that unnecessary confrontation between government functionaries was not in the interest of the country. "In the senate body meeting that was held on the subject of Dr Shahid Masood's appointment as PTV Chairman/MD, I had asked Dr Masood to do his best to uplift Pakistan's image across the world through introducing radical changes in state-run TV channel", he observed. He said that as the incumbent government had itself brought Dr Masood in PTV therefore it was its moral obligation to support him.    When PTV spokesman was asked about the reports of MD's termination, he said that such reports were nothing but only gossips and the replacement of Dr Shahid Masood from his position was out of question. He stated that PTV was gaining its lost image under Masood and the organization was swiftly moving towards revolution to meet present day challenges, posed by private TV channels. He said that some 'miscreants' were fanning such rumors to save their necks from audit report.
