'Poisonous halwa' lands ulema in hospital

FOZIA AZAM and Kashif Abbasi ISLAMABAD Chairman Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi, Liaqut Baloch, and few other Ulema were rushed to the Federal Government Services Hospital (FGSH) on Thursday after falling ill mainly due to food poisoning. The incident took place during Ulema Conference. Leaders of different religious parties gathered at the residence of JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Hayderi in Parliament Lodges where they were served traditional sweet (sohan halwa) after meal. Soon after eating the halwa, all of them fell ill and became unconscious. They were immediately shifted to Polyclinic. The Ulema admitted to the hospital included Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman, Liaquat Baloch, Zakir Hussain, Abdul Khaliq, Qurban Ali, Abdul Rauf, Rashid, Zubair Farooqi, Abid Haleem and Faizan. According to hospital officials, the participants had eaten some thing poisonous in the meal due to which they had food poisoning. Later, all the patients condition was declared stable. The hospital officials after taking sample of the poisoned 'halwa sent it to the National Institute of Health (NIH) for chemical examination. It to be mentioned here that the halwa was presented as a gift to Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Hayderi by someone. Later, the Secretariat Police registered an FIR against the unidentified person. The police said that blood samples of the patients have been collected and sent to concerned department for test. Investigation Officer of the case said, Two cooks who received that Halwa are not fully conscious and being treated in hospital and after their fully recovery police would interrogate them. WE also collected CCTV cameras footages and further investigations is underway, he added. Whereas, SSP operations Tahir Alam Khan, constituted a committee to probe into the matter.
