Peshawar Airport shut down amid 'threats'

PESHAWAR (AFP) - Authorities on Wednesday temporarily closed Peshawar Airport, an aviation official said, citing 'technical reasons' for the shutdown. Peshawar Airport is temporarily closed due to some technical reasons, said Pervez George, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority. He did not expand on the reasons for the shutdown Wednesday afternoon, but a security official at the international airport said they had received reports that the building might be targeted by militants. Our intelligence informed us ... about a possible attack by militants, said the official who refused to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media on the matter. We are taking some extra security measures and then we will decide about re-opening the airport, he added. Situated in the heart of the city, Peshawar International Airport is located approximately 180km from Islamabad. Another official at the airport inquiry desk said that all flights were being diverted to the Federal Capital. NNI adds: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has suspended flights to Peshawar, a PIA spokesman said on Wednesday. The PIA spokesman said that the PIA flights will be operated from Islamabad till indefinite period. The suicide attack on a five-star hotel last week in Peshawar had raised security concerns for PIA as its one pilot was also killed in the attack.
