Bilawal to contest election from Lahore

LAHORE - Punjab Governor Salman Taseer said on Wednesday Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would debut his electoral career from Lahore.   Addressing an Iftar dinner hosted in his honour by a PPP worker at a local hotel, the Governor said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto won many elections from Lahore and now he would ensure that Bilawal Bhutto also wins the next election from here. Reiterating his commitment to galvanise the party at the gross roots level, Taseer vowed to turn Punjab into a bastion of PPP. He said that PML-N would not have been in power in Punjab, had late Benazir Bhutto not persuaded Nawaz Sharif to end boycott of 2008 general election. Salman said PPP did not believe in confrontational politics, and this was the reason that it did not try to create any forward blocs in Punjab Assembly despite having the power and resources to undertake such an adventure. He appreciated political acumen of President Asif Zardari for keeping the federation intact by chanting the slogan of 'Pakistan khape' after Ms Bhutto's assassination when the sentiments were high against the Centre. He was of the view that present leadership was capable of steering the country out of multiple crises. Senior Minister Raja Riaz, Finance Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira and Minister for Sports and Culture Dr Tanvir-ul-Islam were present on the occasion besides party office-bearers. Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, Zekria Butt, Munawar Anjum and Munir Ahmad Khan were prominent.
