USC seeks sugar price raise

ISLAMABAD - The Government is all set to drop another sugar bomb on the helpless consumers as the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) has moved a summary to the Cabinet Secretariat seeking Rs 10 per kg increase in sugar prices at its outlets, it is reliably learnt on Friday. The new sugar prices would be Rs 65 per kg with this move at the state-run stores. Sources in Ministry of Industries and Production told TheNation that summary was being moved in the wake of Ministerial Committees decision. The Ministerial Committee on Sugar headed by Minister for Industries and Production Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani in July agreed that price difference would be not more than Rs 10 per kg at USC outlets from the average market price prevailing in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Keeping this decision in view, the Govt is likely to increase the price of the commodity by Rs 10 per kg and this recommendation would be approved in the coming days. Sources further told that Ministerial Committee on Sugar met on Thursday also approved increase in sugar prices at USC, however the Cabinet would finally decide it, sources added. It is worth mentioning here that the Govt had already enhanced sugar price by Rs 10 per kg at USC outlets in August and raised its price to Rs 55 per kg from Rs 45 per kg. Due to this decision, the people will suffer a lot as the price of the commodity has already gone up to Rs 90 per kg in the open market, and it is feared that it might go up to Rs 100 per kg in the coming days. Due to higher price of the commodity in the open market, demand of sugar at USC has been increased manifold for the last few days.
