Afghan families expelled from AJK

MIRPUR (AJK) - More than 100 families of Afghan refugees living illegally in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) have been expelled from various parts of the area including Muzafarabad district, police sources said. The sources told The Nation here Thursday that extraordinary measures were being taken to beef up security in the AJK, adding that the drive to flush out illegally-settled Afghan nationals from the AJK had also been intensified. "Expulsion of another one hundred Afghan families from Muzafarabad is part of the current drive against them under the Foreigners Act 1952," they added. Talking to this scribe, Deputy Commissioner Ch Tayyab maintained that over 500 unlawful Afghan settlers had so far been rounded up and expelled from Mirpur, Bhimbher and Kotli districts. These Afghans were living illegally and had no valid permission by any competent authority, he said. Some 18 illegal Afghan nationals were booked under the Foreigners Act 1952 in Mirpur last week, the DC said and added that Mirpur City and Thothal police nabbed the said Afghans. He said that from amongst the arrested Afghans, those who were holding valid registration card for Afghan refugees issued by the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) were bailed out. "Deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of all AJK districts have been directed to inform the Afghan nationals through announcements to leave the AJK till the date to be fixed by the district administrations concerned," he revealed. Night patrolling and 'Theekri Pehra' had also been enhanced across Dadayal, Islamgarh, Chakswari, Mirpur City and other villages, the Deputy Commissioner said, adding that special police check posts had been established at all entry points. He also informed that law enforcement agencies had been put on high alert to avert any untoward incident. He stated that all these steps had been taken in a meeting that was held to discuss the current law and order situation in the AJK.
