Pakistan says Indian border firing charges groundless

Pakistan Army on Monday denied charges of opening unprovoked firing on a forward Indian post that killed an Indian Army jawan earlier on Monday, saying the charges made by the Indian Army as "baseless", reports Times of India. Earlier, Indian Army claimed that the Pakistani troops had violated ceasefire along the Line of Control in Mendhar in Poonch sector and opened unprovoked heavy fire. The firing, which continued for over 10 minutes, resulted in the death of an army jawan, a senior Indian army officer alleged, adding that Indian troops later took up positions, but exercised restraint. AFP adds: Lieutenant colonel Anil Kumar Mathur, told AFP, that it was not clear whether it was militants trying to sneak into Kashmir or Pakistani troops who opened fire. "We are gathering more information," he said. Last week, India lodged two protests with Pakistan after its troops came under fire from across the border.
