Molestation bid by trooper triggers protest in Kupwara

In occupied Kashmir, at least a dozen people were injured by Indian paramilitary troops when protests broke out against the molestation bid by an Indian Army man at Arampora in Kupwara district and misbehaviour of the policemen with women in Srinagar. According to Kashmir Media Service, hundreds of people staged demonstrations in Arampora to protest the molestation attempt on an 8-year-old girl by a Territorial Army trooper. The protesters, who were chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, were demanding stern punishment for the trooper. Locals told mediamen that trouble erupted when a youth asked the trooper to stay away from the girl. They said that the trooper was trying to molest the minor girl. "When the youth objected, the trooper pounced on him and thrashed him mercilessly," they added. As the word about the incident spread hundreds of people came out of their homes and staged a demonstration. The policemen and troops appeared on the spot and resorted to baton charge and teargas shelling to disperse the protesters, injuring several of them. On the other hand, the police arrested 42 persons, including minors, teenagers and elderly persons, from Bemina in Srinagar besides misbehaving with women. "A joint party of police and paramilitary troopers cordoned off Nund Reshi colony on Saturday and asked the inmates to come out. "Police arrested 42 persons irrespective of their age," a resident said. As the police personnel were taking away the arrested persons, women tried to persuade the Station House Officer and the Sub Divisional Police Officer to leave them. "The policemen accompanying the officers resorted to baton charge and fired teargas shells to disperse the women. They also misbehaved with the womenfolk," witnesses said.
