Murder of ANP leader triggers riots in Karachi

KARACHI - Violent riots broke out Wednesday in several Pukhtoon dominated areas of the metropolis after the killing of a local leader of Awami National Party (ANP) in New Sabzi Mandi in a firing incident. The police detained over two dozens miscreants involved in the riots. According to Sohrab Goth DSP Irfan Bahadur, 35-year-old Ashraf Agha was shot dead at New Sabzi Mandi over some old rivalry. After the incident, angry mob resorted to riots in the area. They blocked super highway and pelting stones on passing vehicles causing damage to several of them besides burning tyres on the road. The miscreants also restored to aerial firing. After getting the information, heavy contingents of law enforcers rushed to the scene and cordoned off the affected area. They also baton charged the miscreants and used tear gas to disperse them. DSP Irfan Bahadur said that police had also arrested several miscreants. He added that it was not an ethnic or political incident. According to the police, deceased was an extortionist and a land grabber. The people, however, said that deceased Agha was mediating a money dispute between accused Ashraf and another person through a Jirga. On this occasion, accused Ashraf opened fire on the deceased after an exchange of hot words and fled. But Gadap Town SP Rao Anwar said a case would soon be registered against the miscreants. He said the deceased had a dispute with accused Arshad alias Ashraf over some financial issue. The deceased hailed from Qila Abdullah, Balochistan and was the father of six children.
