ISLAMABAD - Speaker National Assembly, Dr Fehmida Mirza Tuesday constituted a 16-member parliamentary committee in a bid to draft a consensus resolution for government's counter terrorism strategy likely to be passed by the parliament either on Wednesday or Thursday. The committee set up during the ongoing in-camera proceedings of the joint sitting of the parliament that was also briefly addressed by the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani before the House was adjourned to meet again Wednesday. The members of the committee include Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Senator Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Abdur Rahim Khan Mandokhel, Senator Agha Shahid Bugti, Senator Waseem Sajjad, Senator Anisa Zaib Tahir Kheli, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, Senator Dr Babar Awan, Munir Orakzai, Senator, Abdur Razzaq, Prof Khursheed Ahmed and Pervaiz Ahmed. The committee held its first meeting till late on Tuesday and discussed contents of the resolution in the light of various issues that had been discussed during the in-camera proceedings on national security and terrorism. The committee would also meet Wednesday morning to further fine-tune the draft before it was handed over to the Speaker for further vetting by the Law Minister ahead of presenting it before the parliament for passage. Addressing the session Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said the joint sitting of the parliament would come out with a joint resolution against terrorism and asked the Opposition to play its due role in passing this resolution. Earlier, in-camera Joint Sitting of the Parliament continued discussion on law and order and security in the country with Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza in the chair. Members from all the political parties in Senate and National Assembly participated in the discussion for more than three hours. Khawaja Asif from the PML-N criticized the policy adopted by the previous government on terrorism and said that it had caused immense loss to the country. He said the eight years of the government policy had not served the interest of the country and demanded of the government to frame a new policy to tackle the challenge of terrorism in FATA and parts of the NWFP. Dr Farooque Sattar from the MQM also spoke and highlighted the threat of Talibanization to the port city of Karachi and other parts of Sindh. Monitoring Desk adds: One of the key partners in the ruling coalition, Jamiat Ullema-e-Islam (F), has demanded of the government to change its foreign policy and halt the ongoing operation in FATA, reported a private TV channel. The demand surfaced in JUI-F parliamentary party meeting held at Parliament Lodges late on Tuesday. After the meeting, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that his party would never back the government in its ongoing operation in FATA. "Foreign invasion and FATA operation is not acceptable," the JUI-F leader said, demanding of the government to resolve issues of NWFP and Balochistan on priority basis. He further said that all issues should be settled through dialogue. Earlier, President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani made a telephonic contact with JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman and tried to win his support on government's policy regarding war on terror. The Maulana demanded of the government to shelve its ongoing policy against terrorism in FATA. He said that negotiations process should be initiated to sort out a permanent solution to the issues Pakistan is facing.
