Joint Pak-Iran body to check extremism

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan and Iran will constitute a joint Shia-Sunni committee comprising Ulema and scholars to restrain extremism in the country. Advisor to Prime Minister on Interior Rehman A Malik Tuesday held a meeting with Iran's Acting Minister for Interior Seyed Mehdi Hashemi. Rehman Malik while talking to the media about the meeting with his Iranian counterpart said that they discussed the issue of extremism in view of sectarian clashes and agreed that there were certain elements creating hatred among Muslims fanning extremism. "The committee would deliberate on the issue of extremism and pave the way for harmony and consensus among both the sects", Malik said. He also said both Sunni and Shia sects follow Islam, and Islam teaches harmony and peace. Both the sides also discussed human trafficking, petrol and diesel smuggling. "It is also decided in the meeting that focal points will be set up at the border to stop human trafficking and the smuggling of petrol and diesel," Malik said. He further added that the issue of criminals' exchange also came under discussion and the Iranian delegation requested for the release of 16 Iranian persons kidnapped in Pakistan. The Advisor further said that both the countries would take measures to promote tourism and trade and Iran also promised to provide electricity to Pakistan.  Iranian Acting Minister for Interior Seyed Mehdi Hashemi termed the meeting very positive and said that it would bear positive results.
