FIA to probe Musharraf in Benazir murder case

ISLAMABAD The intriguing move by Joint Investigation Team (JIT) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) with regard to sending a 32-page questionnaire to former president Pervez Musharraf in connection with the assassination of ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is unlikely to yield any result and would only prove an eyewash, TheNation has learnt reliably. It is pertinent to mention here that the FIA on Monday decided to include former president Musharraf in BBs murder probe. It also sent a questionnaire for final approval to the Interior Ministry in this regard. FIA officials said the investigation wing covering Bhuttos murder case formed the questionnaire, which mostly consisted of questions related to the security arrangements provided to the late ex-premier. There are also questions related to the steps taken by the Interior Ministry during Musharrafs era, which are now being exposed in the form of contradictory statements. The sources in the FIA, however, said that Interior Ministry had passed the directions to the Agency to probe Musharraf only to save the skin of the incumbent rulers as well as Interior Minister as previously the JIT had only endorsed the version of the investigations carried out during the Musharraf regime as the challan report says. Naseer Tanoli, the counsel for the accused involved in the murder of Benazir Bhutto, saw the move to probe Musharraf as only a delaying tactic of the govt, since laws did not permit to reinvestigate the case once the final challan was submitted before the court. Only the absconder wanted in the specific case could be investigated after the submission of complete challan or in case incomplete challan had been submitted, he said. He further said that the new person could be investigated after the submission of challan only after the already accused under trial in the case mention his name during the course of investigations. He also informed that Supreme Court in 2007 had clearly directed that the case could not be reinvestigated after the submission of complete challan of the case. The sources in the Interior Ministry informed that the move of the agency to send a questionnaire was only an eyewash after certain quarters criticised the investigations of the JIT led by Khalid Qureshi for giving a clean chit to former President Gen (R) Musharraf and other government officers including some military officers who were never probed by the team. The sources in the Interior Ministry said that it was not understandable that the questionnaire was being sent to Pervez Musharraf at a time when JIT had submitted the challan before the anti-terrorism court. However, the sources in the FIA revealed that JIT was now focussing on the security lapses of the fatal incident of December 27, 2007 that killed dozens of people including Mohartama Benazir Bhutto. The important questions that are part of the questionnaire being sent to Pervez Musharraf included what pre-emptive measures were taken by the then government after Benazir Bhutto had written a letter of life threats mentioning three important personalities on October 16, 2007, two days before her return to Pakistan. Another question is why Benazir Bhutto was not provided fool proof security after the suicide attack in Karsaz Karachi on October 19, 2007. Still another question is why Benazir Bhutto was not provided the security even to the level of Ch Shujaat Hussain and Shaukat Aziz, two former Prime Ministers of Pakistan. The questionnaire included why air surveillance was not done during the public meetings of Benazir Bhutto that she was doing as part of her election campaign as it was done during the public gatherings addressed by Pervez Musharraf. The sources in the Agency has also revealed that the JIT is likely to extend the network of investigations and many other people including Brig Javed Iqbal Cheema, former DG National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) would also be probed further and similar questionnaires would be sent to them. Meanwhile, Barrister Saif Ali, General secretary of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) said that his party president, Pervez Musharraf had not received any questionnaire. However, he said that it had come to his knowledge that a decision in this regard had been taken by the government. The incumbent rulers are only politicising the issue as it was strange to probe Musharraf after the submission of challan to the court, he added.
