Sufi asks TTP, Army to dismantle checkposts

MINGORA - Asking Taliban militants to desist from influencing administration and interfering in the affairs of police and security forces, Maulana Sufi Muhammad, chief of banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM), has urged the displaced people to return to their homes. "There is a positive advancement in the negotiations between TNSM and Tehrik-e- Taliban Pakistan, Swat," remarked Maulana Sufi in response to a question during a press Conference here at Tableeghi Markaz on Monday. Maulana Sufi along with TNSM Spokesman Amir Ezzat appeared before the media for the first time since the signing of agreement with the NWFP government. "Taliban must desist from armed activities, patrolling and arms exhibition with immediate effect," Maulana Sufi said, suggesting Taliban to let the administration and custodian of law and order to fulfil their responsibilities. He added that such acts on the part of Taliban militants were causing unrest among the people. "I am determined to live in Swat till return of peace," he replied to a question. He said that TNSM, TTP and government were aware of the nefarious designs of a third party that was bent on sabotaging peace efforts, adding that all were determined to foil such conspiracies against the historical agreement pertained to establishment of Islamic courts in the area. Before answering the queries of the media persons, the TNSM Spokesman Amir Ezzat read a text that contained certain conditions, demands and requests. He said neither Taliban would go for exhibition of arms, nor for armed patrolling in the area. Similar was the TNSM demand of the government to shift troops to barracks from schools, mosques and houses. He also requested the internally displaced people to come back to their homes. Through this declaration, the TNSM informed that no one would exhibit arms. In this respect, Maulana Sufi said that both of the sides had assured him of remaining peaceful and patient towards each other. He called for easing restrictions on checkposts. He said activists and stalwarts of TNSM would help the personnel of law enforcing agencies, particularly police, establish its writ in the restive areas. He also urged the government to reinstate all those personnel of security forces who were sacked during violence and terrorism. He requested all such personnel of the security forces to return to their duties. Sufi suggested both government and TTP to free all arrested persons and hostages. The government was also suggested to compensate those who had lost their relatives and properties during the unrest. He requested NWFP Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti to initiate distribution of compensation cheques among the affected people in Swat. Maulana Sufi requested all political, religious and social groups and circles to fulfil responsibilities in return of peace, which would enable them to establish Islamic courts in the area. He was of the firm belief that both government and Taliban were determined in honouring of commitments with the TNSM in that respect. He said that return of peace was only possible with the restoration of writ of the law in the area. Maulana Sufi also expressed resentment over the assassination of journalist Musa Khankhel and abduction of District Coordination Officer (DCO) saying, "Such type of acts were causing unrest among people and creating hurdles in return of peace." Agencies add: TNSM chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad revealed his 10-point agenda for the permanent restoration of peace in Swat Valley. He urged TTP to end guerrilla activities. The Maulana said the peace would be restored through Sharia system. He sees involvement of third party in the killing of private TV channel reporter Musa Khankhel and said would try to arrest the killer of Musa Khan. He and his spokesman urged the TTP to stop preventing Army ration trucks from moving around the region and stop carrying weapons. They also said troops should not be barracked in school buildings and called on the government to compensate for deaths in Swat. Both sides should dismantle checkpoints, they said. Ezzat called upon both the Federal government and Taliban to ensure proper imposition of Shariah in accordance with the 'Swat Pact' for the restoration of durable peace in Swat Valley and urged the release of prisoners from both sides. He said they are thankful to the government for the announcement of Shariah enforcement in Swat. Therefore, he asked the government to implement the Shariah in letter and spirit to ensure long-lasting peace in Swat Valley.
