Court returns AQK review petition

ISLAMABAD - The Registrar Office of Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday returned the review petition with objections on the issue of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's detention. Barrister Iqbal Jaffery, the counsel of Dr Khan, had filed the review against the recent verdict of Chief Justice IHC Justice Sardar Muhammad Aslam with the contention that his client as being a peaceful citizen of Pakistan deserved absolute freedom of speech, movement and liberty and had never uttered anything against the interests of Pakistan. The IHC has relaxed restrictions on the movement and activities of Dr Khan in its last Monday's judgement while disposing of the petition of Barrister Jaffery challenging the four-year long detention of father of country's nuclear programme. However, the court had imposed a ban on Dr Khan from talking to media on the issue of nuclear proliferation. Raising objections on the review petition, the Registrar Office has stated that the relief sought in the fresh appeal has already been given to Dr Khan, thus, there is no need to further agitate the court on the issue. After the refusal of the Registrar Office, Barrister Jaffery told media persons that he would file an appeal against the objections raised by the Office. He also pointed out that his review petition also called on the court to initiate contempt proceedings against a government lawyer for misleading the court on the status of Dr A Q Khan during the detention of detenue.
