QUETTA - Inmates at Balochistans largest jail, Machh Central Jail, rioted on Thursday against alleged torture on them by the authorities and lack of health facilities. The inmates took over 15 jail staff hostage and set ablaze barber shop and food provisions due to which black smoke rose to the sky from inside the jail. The jail administration resorted to tear gas shelling and aerial firing to bring the situation under control. The inmates warned that they would not suspend their protest until and unless the higher authorities reach the prison and accept their demands. As things heated up, large numbers of police and Frontier Corps arrived from Quetta to take control of the situation, witnesses added. They complained that the jail administration allegedly tortured the inmates and were being denied proper health facilities. They demanded an inquiry should be conducted into alleged torture on prisoners, proper health facilities be provided to them and all other facilities be given them under the jail manual. Provincial Minister Sultan Tareen who had specially arrived from Quetta on the demand of prisoners and assured them that a judicial inquiry would be conducted into complaints of prisoners and steps would be taken for removal of their grievances. After successful negotiations the prisoners ended their protest and went back into their barracks after six hours. They also released over 15 staff of jail whom they had made captives.
