Aitzaz quits lawyers' politics

KARACHI - Prominent leader of lawyers' movement, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, Monday said that after the reinstatement of CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, legal community would remain vigilant and safeguard the independence of judiciary. Talking to newsmen here, Aitzaz Ahsan declared that he was no longer part of the lawyers' politics and now it will be led by Munir A Malik, Hamid Khan and others lawyers leaders. He said that reinstatement of the Chief Justice Iftakhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other judges was the victory of the historic struggle of the legal fraternity. He hoped the practice of suo moto action would soon be resumed to provide justice to the poor and downtrodden segments of the society. To a query, Aitzaz Ahsan said that lawyers' movement was not only restricted to Punjab and added that people from every nook and corner of the country participated in this historic struggle. He strictly rejected the negative propaganda from some biased politicians, who had termed the lawyers' movement a 'show of Punjab' only. He added that people in all parts of Pakistan celebrated the restoration of judiciary which was an irrefutable testimony that it was the countrywide movement. Aitzaz further pointed out that judges could only take decision on some issue while its implementation was the responsibility of the administration. He said that the judges could have been reinstated in 2008 but some politicians, currently in the government, were against it.
