Pakistan must be taken on board: Kayani

ISLAMABAD Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who is currently visiting the US, has held meetings with the senior American military commanders in Florida and emphasised on the need for evolving a framework about reintegration of Afghan Taliban. Well-placed diplomatic and military sources informed TheNation on Tuesday that General Kayani had held extensive consultations with the American commanders and other senior Pentagon officials. During the meeting with the US Secretary of Defence Roberts Gates, he demanded a comprehensive outline about Talibans reintegration. The sources said that General Kayani had made it clear that Pakistan could not remain oblivious to such developments that had far reaching implications for Islamabad. Pakistan must be taken on board with regard to the political developments in Afghanistan, informed military sources quoted General Kayani as telling the US military commanders and other defence officials. Pakistan Army Chief will also attend the opening ceremony of the talks between Secretary Clinton and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi at the State Department today (Wednesday). The US and Pakistan are trying to build long-term strategic partnership through well-planned initiatives for mutual benefits largely addressing Pakistans national security concerns as well as future roadmap for Afghanistan. The US-Pakistan strategic dialogue has gained extraordinary importance on the face of war against the Taliban reaching its endgame phase in Afghanistan. The military sources further said that General Kayani had also made it clear to Pentagon that US-Pakistan strategic partnership could only be successful when US would recognise Pakistan as a legitimate nuclear-armed state. This would not only help promote US image in Pakistan but also help in balancing the strategic balance in South Asia. Apart from this, the sources said that General Kayani had also discussed issues relating to use of civilian nuclear power plants for energy and security of Pakistan, transfer of US drone technology to Pakistan, Indo-Afghan propaganda against Pakistan Army and its intelligence agencies, Indian efforts in destabilising Pakistan especially involvement of Indian intelligence agencies in Balochistan and joint security of Pak-Afghan border.
