ISLAMABAD Secretary General Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Jahangir Badr, Saturday, suspended the membership of Senator Safdar Abbassi from the partys Central Executive Committee for appearing on a private TV channel in violation of the partys direction. A few other party MPs were also served with show cause notices on the same ground and were asked to explain why they had appeared in the talk shows on a private TV channel, about which the party had decided a complete boycott. Sources in the Pakistan Peoples Party informed that in a recently held meeting of the core committee of the PPP it was principally decided that strict party discipline would be observed and those deviating from the party line should be reprimanded. The show cause notices were issued in the light of the decisions taken by the core committee held under the chair of the partys Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari a few days back wherein the lousy party discipline came under sharp criticism and it was decided in principle to spruce up the party discipline. Sources in the party informed TheNation that Senator Safdar Abbassis CEC membership was cancelled, as he had not timely responded to the show cause issued to him in this connection by the party Secretary General Jahangir Badr. Commenting on his suspension, Senator Abbasi said that he had filed the reply to the show cause issued to him and added that by appearing on a TV Channel he had not committed any crime and added that banning party leaders appearance on some particular TV channel was not a democratic move on part of the party leadership. Sources aware of the development said that Senator Safdar Abbassi and his spouse Ms Nahid Khan were already under a cloud in the party since they were not in the good books of President Asif Ali Zardari, who is the Co-Chairman of the party so Abbasis suspension was obvious. These sources said that the show cause notices were also issued to Sherry Rehman and Azim Doltana on similar charges but both of these leaders were not available for comments on the subject. Sources further said that as Sherry Rehman was also not having smooth sailing in the party, she could be reprimanded for this negligence on her part and could lose her CEC membership while Azim Doltana, who is also Parliamentary Secretary on Information was also served with show cause notice. Sources in the party further informed that Nabeel Gabol, Minister of State for Ports and Shipping, was also served with show cause notice by the party Secretary General for giving irresponsible statement for calling Army in Karachi to handle law and order situation. Sources said that being part of the Federal Cabinet his statement was assumed as partys policy on the matter, but actually it was contrary to the partys policy and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had dissociated himself and his party from the statement a day after he passed the remarks.
