LAHORE/QUETTA PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Friday telephoned Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Khan Raisani to apprise them about the sensitivity regarding arrest of Jamhoori Watan Party leader Shahzain Bugti. Nawaz was of the considered opinion that the matter should be handled very carefully since the Balochistan situation demanded its pragmatic handling. 'Any such step should be avoided, which can deteriorate the situation further, which is already a matter of huge concern for the Pakistanis, he is quoted to have said, while advising the Premier that in the present democratic system, all matters must be resolved democratically, and no action should impart an impression of dictatorial leanings. 'The civilian authorities must act in accordance with the law, and the impression that Shahzain was being handled unjustly be mitigated, he suggested. He underlined the need for mutual efforts on the part of Gilani and Raisani for knowing the actual situation regarding Bugtis arrest, and act accordingly considering the sensitivity of the matter so that divisive elements could not draw benefit from the situation. Nawaz Sharif also asked Raisani to play his due role for resolving the crisis. Meanwhile, a shutter-down strike was observed in Quetta on Friday on a call given by Jamhoori Watan Party to condemn the arrest of Shahzain Bugti. Shahzain, who is also provincial President of JWP, was arrested by Frontier Corps on Wednesday at Baleli check-post along with his 27 companions when he was coming back to Quetta. A large cache of weapons was allegedly recovered from his motorcade. In Quetta, shops, markets and business centres located at Jinnah Road, Liaquat Bazaar, Prince Road, Fatima Jinnah Road, Masjid Road, Share-e-Iqbal and Abdul Sattar Road remained shut. Balochistan Trader Associations and other political parties also supported the strike call. However, shops and small markets in the outskirts of City remained open. Tight security measures were in place by administration to avoid any untoward incident as personnel of police, Frontier Corps and Balochistan Constabulary kept patrolling the City throughout the day. Police sources said that some JWP activists resorted to aerial firing in some parts of the City to create panic and forcing shopkeepers to close their shops due to which police seized their weapons and arrested about nine persons. Meanwhile, addressing a Press conference, JWP chief Nawabazda Talal Akbar Bugti asked Punjab to play its role to solve the problems of Balochistan and stop the alleged injustice of security forces, otherwise, separatist movements in the province would get momentum. JWP leader said that the actions and behaviour of security forces heads had caused numerous damage to the country and if same attitude persisted the country would collapse and the Punjab would badly suffer. 'Punjab should play its role against the illegal detention of Shahzain Bugti, he added. He asked Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani for Court Martial of IGFC for arresting Shahzain Bugti. Talal Akbar Bugti thanked masses and traders for making the strike a success and said that police arrested 9 JWP workers. He said that due to actions of Pervez Musharraf and former IGFC Saleem Nawaz Balochistan was facing a difficult situation while the action of incumbent IGFC was pushing province towards fire. 'I have mentioned several times that FC has set up its parallel govt in Balochistan and playing the role of General Niazi, he added. He said that he would also convene a grand Jirga of Baloch chieftains regarding arrest of Shahzain Bugti and in which the future course of action would be decided. He said that Mian Muhammad Nawaz Shairf should summon an APC about Balochistan situation and play his role to solve the problems of the province. On the occasion, JWP Secretary General Mir Muhammad Yousuf Notazai rejected joint investigating team formed by the government to probe into the arrest of Shahzain Bugti and demanded that a commission comprising a retired judge of Supreme Court should be constituted and the task of investigation should be given to the commission.
