Law-enforcers become law-breakers

QUETTA The capital City witnessed worst traffic jam on Monday at all main roads of the City after some 3,000 unruly police personnel agitated on the roads for acceptance of their demands including increase in salaries. The people faced great inconvenience as a result of the protest. Dozens of cops went to the extent of firing blank shots with their service weapons in the air, manhandled media persons, try to put vehicle of Home Minister on fire and closed all main roads, bringing the normal life to a halt. According to details, personnel of district police, Balochistan Constabulary (BC) and Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) staged a protest rally against non-increase in their salaries, and non-payment of compensation to the heirs of the police personnel who have been killed during performing their duties. Hundreds of police personnel in plain clothes boycotted their duties and gathered at Quetta Police Lines from where they started their rally which passed through various parts of the City and reached at Governors House. They chanted slogans against government and forcefully entered Governors House. Governor Balochistan Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi addressed protesting police personnel, asking them to stay calm as he would take up this matter with the provincial government. Later, the protesters including some in uniform entered into Chief Ministers Secretariat where they smashed glasses of the building and chanted slogans against Chief Minister. Provincial Minister for Revenue Engineer Zamrak Khan of ANP talking to protesters tried to persuade the protesters to disperse peacefully as the provincial government would consider their demands as soon as Chief Minister returns to Quetta from Islamabad. The protesters, however, refused to pay any heed to him, saying that they will continue their strike until and unless all their demands were accepted including 100 per cent increase in their salaries. The enraged protestors fired dozens of bank shots in the air in different localities of the City which created panic among the people. Some of the protesters also beat up some pedestrians. They torched tyres at Zarghoon Road, Jinnah Road, Prince Road, Hali Road, Enscomb Road that caused huge traffic jam in the City and inconvenience for the public. Home Minister Mir Zafarullah Zehri visited different areas of the City to calm down the protesting police personnel but they refused to call off their protest. The protesting policemen also maltreated newsmen and injured a reporter of a private TV channel while using objectionable language against journalists. There were also reports that some of the enraged protestors tried to set a vehicle of media on fire. Meanwhile, Balochistan Union of Journalists has strongly condemned the manhandling of newsmen and announced a protest rally against the incident on Tuesday (today).
