Attabad Lake: Water level 2 meter away from spillway

Water of Atta Abad Lake has risen and is just two meter away far from spillway and water out flow from the lake is expected till 29 May. According to media reports, officials of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said water outflow from spillway would start soon and 312 families comprising 42000 affectees have been shifted to secure places. The families' have protested against non-provision of relief goods and establishment of relief camp in red zone. The jawans of Pak Army have been deployed at Gilgit, Challas and Hunza to tackle any untoward situation. Teams have been formed to tackle any emergency situation. The officials of NDMA further told that there is danger of huge land sliding in Gilmit, valley of Raka Poshi while, the area has been declared red zone. The affectees protested that if relief goods would not be provided with in 24 hours then they would protest vehemently. More than 40 protestors tried to go towards spillway but administration stopped them. Meanwhile, six more houses drowned in when water level in Hunza lake had risen by three feet and water level is increasing day by day. A medical team comprising of 18 members including lady doctor have been dispatched to Hunza through helicopter. The medical team is led by Additional Director Health Services. The team has taken drugs valuing Rs 20,000 with them. Meanwhile talking to a private TV channel Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lt. General (retd) Nadeem Ahmed has hinted that Attabad lake could overflow till May 28. Chairman NDMA, however said that in case of busting of glacier or heavy rains, the lake could overflow in night between May 27 and 28. Responding to a question, Lt. Gen (retd) Nadeem Ahmed said that relief activities are being underway and foods, medicines and other necessary items are being provided to affected people. He said that the next phase would be rehabilitation and reconstruction of the areas and recommendations in this regard have been sent to the government.
