Parliament to legislate, courts to interpret: CM

LAHORE Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that the petition filed in the Supreme Court regarding the 18th Amendment is a constitutional and judicial issue. Therefore, irresponsible comments and remarks over the matter should be avoided. He said the Parliament is a representative institution and has the powers to legislate while the judiciary has the right to interpret laws and play its role in ensuring the supremacy of justice and fair play. In a statement issued on Monday, Shahbaz said people from all walks of life, including civil society and politicians, had rendered invaluable sacrifices for the restoration of judiciary and supremacy of law and he had full confidence that the judiciary would not give any decision contrary to the spirit of democracy and the demands of justice. However, he stressed the need to respect judiciarys verdict irrespective of whether it was in favour or against a particular person. Shahbaz said some quarters had been commenting on the role of intelligence agencies regarding the clash between institutions. However, he thought that in the presence of a professional leader of the calibre of Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the prospect of involvement of agencies in any such conspiracy was not only unbelievable, but also impossible.
