Unprecedented aid pouring in: Gilani

ISLAMABAD (APP) Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday rejected that his government had any credibility issue and was getting an overwhelming response from the international community to help the flood-affected people. He asked the media to help Pakistani people in gaining international support at a time when they were hit by the worst-ever natural calamity, instead of criticising the government. In an interview with a private TV channel, Gilani said the government was getting billions of dollars in assistance for the ongoing war on terror. Are we not dealing with the IMF, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank? Are international donors not funding us ... ? Had there been an issue of credibility, would they still be providing us the funds? he questioned. The PM said the government was also getting bilateral assistance from various friendly countries including the United States, under the Kerry-Lugar Bill. Has anyone pointed finger towards us? he questioned. Gilani said the media must support the 'popularly elected coalition government. You should trust the people of Pakistan. They have elected us. Do not humiliate their conscience, Gilani said. He said the government through the World Bank and Asian Development Bank were going in for damage assessment and once the details of casualties, damages to the houses, agricultural land and other losses are determined, compensation will be announced. He said being the prime minister of the entire country it was his obligation to ensure that the compensation was paid transparently through a judicious system. He, however, said the media was not playing its due role in this regard. You are creating a hype. You are not helping the country. You are preventing Pakistan from getting aid, the Prime Minister said and urged the media to help in helping the affected people. He said unprecedented aid was coming and his government would ensure that it reaches the people in a transparent manner. Gilani said the world was now more sensitised and aware of the plight of the people of Pakistan. You [media] need to work for the nation ... we are working for them and we will not disappoint them, Gilani assured. He recalled that there was a third party validation for the donor funding after the 2005 earthquake and a system was in place to ensure transparency. He pointed that the donors have made pledges of over 770 million US dollars and most would go through the NGOs. PM Gilani said Secretary Finance has already informed that a dedicated website would provide transparent disbursement of funds, but made it clear that most of the funding would not be directed through the government of Pakistan. PM Gilani said, The people of Pakistan have high hopes from the media. You should ask the world for donations so that the people get the much needed help. He said the people of Pakistan are helping in an unprecedented manner and added people were giving billions in cash to the government. Prime Minister Gilani in a message to the nation said the government understands their problems, pain and anguish. I assure you that this coalition government will help you in your hour of distress, he said and added the media should respect the mandate of the people of Pakistan. He said he was blamed of going for photo ops, but in fact he got Rs 1.58 billion, that would be used to rehabilitate the people. Gilani also gave out details of his meeting with the PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif following which he announced a transparent commission for fund collection. He said he was in Jacobabad when he got the message that Sharif wants to talk to him and has some proposals. The Prime Minister assured Sharif to meet on the first opportunity to discuss the suggestions as he has very good terms with Nawaz Sharif. He said during the meeting, Federal Ministers Qamar Zaman Kaira, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Nazar Gondal accompanied him, while Ishaq Dar accompanied Nawaz Sharif. Gilani said he has friendly relations with Mian sahib and he suggested some names, to which he also added four including the name of Justice (r) Bhagwan Das. He said Sharif proposed that provinces should pool 30 per cent of their Annual Development Programme to the fund. Gilani said this was something that needed to be discussed with the allies and the provinces. The Premier added that he discussed it with ANP chief Asfandyar Wali and MQM, while could not get through to some other political leaders, who were out of the country. He said the chief ministers were of the view that they would not pool the funds as they have been decentralised under the 18th amendment and instead proposed setting up of an oversight commission to ensure transparency and judicious distribution. PM Gilani when asked about the controversy surrounding the committee announced by him in Multan and the reports that it was not being allowed to work by the army, said he asked the army to distribute the relief goods as it was being looted by the displaced persons and was not reaching the affected. He said he discussed the modalities with all the parties how to distribute the relief goods in the area and the political parties representatives themselves pointed the names; one each from the PPP, PML-N and PML-Quaid. He said the committee was set-up specially to ensure that there was equitable distribution, but the provinces did not come up with any names and it could not even start work. To a question about politicking on the breaching of river embankments in Sindh, Gilani said this was being politically exploited in Punjab as well. PM Gilani regretted the politics of flood in the provinces and said it needs to be avoided to reach out to the affected people. Gilani when asked about remarks of MQM Chief Altaf Hussain he said he could not understand as Altaf had in the past extended support on 18th amendment and democracy. He said he would soon realise and say that it was not what he meant.
