PESHAWAR - A single member bench of Peshawar High Court on Wednesday accepted states appeal filed against the acquittal of sitting MNA Zafar Baig Bhatani in corruption charges and awarded him three year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 million. Police arrested the lawmaker in the court premises and sent him to jail. Representing all the six Frontier Regions (FR) in the National Assembly, the sitting lawmaker from NA-47 (FATA) Zafar Baig Bhatani has also remained an ex-XEN of Communications and Works Department. Earlier, the MNA had also been apprehended by anti-corruption police on August 1, 1995, on corruption charges and for making assets through unfair means and using his official position. After the trial, the anti-corruption court had dismissed the corruption charges leveled against the C&W official and issued his acquittal orders on August 8, 2000. However, later the state filed an appeal in PHC against the judgement of the anti-corruption court and requested the court to set aside the lower courts judgement. On Wednesday the single member bench chaired by Chief Justice Ijaz Afzal Khan accepted the appeal and set aside the judgement of subordinate court. It is also worth mentioning here that National Accountability Bureau also charged the accused in corruption case in 2001.
