Anti-peace elements behind murder of Balochs: Zardari

ISLAMABAD - Referring to the recent killings of three Baloch leaders, President Asif Ali Zardari said Tuesday that such incidents were engineered by those who wanted to sabotage the government efforts to bring peace and stability to the province. He said this while speaking in a meeting of the PPP MPs and MPAs hailing from Balochistan. The President and Prime Minister jointly chaired the meeting. Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan and Senator Raza Rabbani also attended the meeting. The meeting with PPP Parliamentarians and MPAs from Balochistan is part of the consultative dialogue to evolve consensus on various issues relating to Balochistan. While commenting upon the situation in Balochistan, the President said that remedial political measures are being taken to improve the situation in the province. He deplored the unfortunate incident in Turbat that contributed to increasing the tension in the province. He said that those who wanted to sabotage the government efforts to bring peace and stability to the province have engineered such incidents. He also said that the government would not only ensure that the culprits were brought to book but also that such incidents did not recur in future. Talking to the parliamentarians, President Zardari said that the government had taken special measures to address the financial problems of Balochistan and announced a development package of Rs 47 billion for Balochistan. The completion of the Gwader project recently has advanced our strategic interests, created jobs and generated economic activity in the remote areas of Balochistan, the President added. Referring to the issue of internally displaced persons, the President said that the government was trying to create an enabling environment to facilitate the return and rehabilitation of the displaced persons in Balochistan who had fled their homes recently. He said that he had also asked the Parliament in his address to explore ways and means for the voluntary return of the exiles and grant of general amnesty to the political prisoners there. He said that the government had also formed a Parliamentary Committee on issues of national security and Balochistan and the committee had already formulated its recommendations. He said the government would give a serious thought to these recommendations. The President also asked the MPs from Balochistan to have the resolutions passed by the provincial assembly unanimously on issues relating to the province. He said that they would be placed before the Parliament and in this way the issues of the provinces will be addressed through parliamentary process with national backing. Addressing the MPs, the Prime Minister said that the government planned to not only increase the police force in the province but also bring its pay structure at par with the Punjab Police. The Chief Minister Balochistan apprised the meeting about the current development activities in the province. The President urged provincial government to take all steps for the uplift of Balochistan in order to eliminate the problems faced by the people of Balochistan. The President apprised the Baloch MPs of his forthcoming visit to the US and proposed meetings with the US policy makers on bilateral ties and issues relating to militancy and peace in the region. The President also invited them to offer suggestion in this regard. Those who spoke on the occasion included Nawabzada Aurangzeb Alamgir, Sabir Ali Baloch, Dr Ayatullah Durrani, Shafiq Ahmad Khan, Dr Zile Huma, Agha Irfan Karim, Mir Muhammad Amin Umrani, Mir Muhammad Sadiq Umrani and Haji Ali Madad Jattak. The participants informed the President about issues being confronted by the province of Balochistan, the problems being faced by the people of their areas and also suggested remedial measures. Most of the speakers highlighted the issues of law and order, security, lack of educational facilities and unemployment in the province. The President said that the government would consider the suggestions given by the members.
