A rosy national picture at cabinet meeting

ISLAMABAD - Minister of State for Information, Syed Samsam Ali Bokhari, dispelling the possibility of any US drone attack on Quetta, made it loud and clear that no compromise on the countrys sovereignty would be made. The Minister of State for Information stated this while briefing newsmen regarding the cabinet meeting held under the chair of PM on Monday, which also approved National Drinking Water Policy envisaging provision of adequate quantity of safe drinking water to the entire population at an affordable cost. Asked to comment on reports of masses migration from Waziristan amid fear of impending operation in the area, the minister ruled out the possibility of any such operation. To a question about the expected power tariff increase, the minister said that no decision has as yet been taken to increase the electricity tariff, which would be decided by NEPRA and not by the cabinet. He further explained that any decision regarding electricity tariff increase would be made by NEPRA in consultation with all the stakeholders. The cabinet also approved, in principle, the draft Energy Conservation Bill 2009 in order to enhance the energy supply and reduce energy consumption and energy demand per capita. Elaborating the water policy the minister said the drinking water policy was aimed at protecting the public health and offset the huge environment and natural resources damage cost to the countrys economy in a coordinated manner. It sought to improve the quality of life of people by reducing incidence of death and illness caused by water-borne diseases. The meeting ratified the decision of the ECC regarding introduction of Ethanol-10 (E-10) blended fuel in the country. As per revised decision, petroleum levy would be applicable at the reduced rate of Rs. 8.5 per litre on the ethanol component of E-10. It also approved an amendment in the OGRA ordinance enabling the OGRA to regulate marketing and pricing of ethanol as a petroleum product. The meeting was informed that the core inflation had declined and CPI-based inflation had decelerated. This improvement was highlighted as an achievement attributable to the initiatives undertaken by the Government. The Prime Minister constituted a three-member committee, headed by Federal Education Minister, to look into the issues regarding establishment of National University of Law and Social Sciences in Islamabad. It would have its campuses in all the four provinces. The committee would put up its findings in the next meeting of the cabinet. The Cabinet ratified a proposed amendment in WTO Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement for pharmaceuticals. If adopted by WTO, it would allow members to grant compulsory license for production and export of patented pharmaceuticals to countries with insufficient manufacturing capacity. It also gave approval for negotiations on draft agreement for deputation of Pakistan Armed Forces personnel to Brunei Darussalam, negotiations for defence cooperation agreement with Romania and negotiations for finalization of MoU for defence cooperation with Turkmenistan. The cabinet approved signing of loan framework agreement with China for PAKSAT-IR system project. It also approved draft Pakistan Marine Insurance Bill aimed at providing adequate protection to marine insurance companies, their claimants or principal debtors in a marine insurance claim. Terming the concerns shown by certain quarters regarding the Kerry-Lugar Bill as unfounded the minister said that there was nothing wrong in the said bill against the interests of Pakistan.
