Pak ready to facilitate Allied forces Afghan pullout: Qureshi

LONDON - Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that Pakistan will exercise its influence to bring Afghan Taliban leadership round for reconciliation, at the same time it will play its full role to expedite the process of Allied forces pullout from Afghanistan. "We shall also provide Afghan army and police with training facilities," he said. Talking to The Nation on Saturday, the Foreign Minister said there were only a few people from Taliban leadership who had not undergone a change in their thinking so far, whereas a majority of them had changed their views and were now prepared to make peace with the government. Qureshi opined that developing good relations with Afghanistan was the only way to defuse Indian influence in Afghanistan. "A considerable change has occurred in Afghanistan's approach. The first question asked by majority of Afghan Parliament members from Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmay Rasool when he assumed office, was about his plan to better Pak-Afghan relations and this was the greatest proof of change appearing in Afghan thought," the Foreign Minister said. He said the situation now was conducive for Afghanistan to get aside from India and draw near to Pakistan, therefore, Pakistan must lend a helping hand to it in this testing time and in its reconciliatory efforts, for which the Afghan President had also requested during London conference. "The Afghan President did not say a word against Pakistan in London conference which point to the change in thinking," he said. In reply to a question, the foreign minister said that Al-Qaeda and the USA could never reach an accord and the US had a clear mandate in this connection that worldwide Al-Qaeda network had to be broken. He said that Pakistan army was not doing operation in the tribal areas of Pakistan on the US dictation rather on the grounds that there were a number of people in those areas who had harmed Pakistan. He also disclosed that he had invited his Iranian counterpart Mottaqi to take part in London conference but he could not do so, thus being deprived of presenting his stance on the platform. The US will have to take Iran with it as Iran has an important role to play in maintaining peace in Afghanistan. Qureshi further said Pakistan would exercise its influence in making Taliban leadership agree on peace process. The US will continue to support democracy in Pakistan even after the success of peace process in Afghanistan. He disclosed that Pakistan's triangular formula of dialogue, deterrence and development had a success in London conference. He also told the effort were on for promotion of ties with central Asian States.
