MULTAN - Lamenting the common tendency of pointing fingers at the just and democratically elected governments, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Sunday said even the founding leaders of the country were accused of corruption but no one ever dared questioning the dictators. The corruption charges are always levelled against the elected governments by some elements to destabilise the system, he said while addressing a news conference at Multan Airport at the end of a two-day visit to his native town. To a question about the corruption charges against the government and its ministers, Gilani said the government underwent tough accountability process as it had given complete freedom to media and judiciary. I believe if our institutions get stronger, the process of accountability will start and end corruption automatically. He said the ministers had appeared before the courts while the FIA questioned them frequently in corruption cases. They (ministers) feel as if they are in the opposition and not the government, he remarked. He called for identifying the root cause of corruption, saying it was the only way to uproot the menace. No one is free of this charge. Even those who signed Pakistan Resolution and run the independence movement were blamed and disqualified. The governments of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Junejo, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif were also toppled on corruption allegations, he recalled, adding that the Chief Justice of Pakistan was also accused of corruption. But why no one ever said any thing about the dictators? he posed a question. About unemployment, he cited law and order as the biggest issue. Were faced with terrorism. As soon as the law and order situation improves, the foreign investment will go up, generating new job opportunities, he said, adding that the government would ensure power supply to industries. Referring to Thar Coal Project, he said it was the incumbent government which started work on the project, as no one could even decide during the last 63 years that who owned the asset. Now foreign companies are submitting bids for the project. It is for the first time that the project is heading in the right direction, he claimed. To a query about the reports by financial institutions regarding strained economy, the premier rejected the assumption, saying it was written in a technical language. The foreign exchange reserves soared to $17 billion for the first time in the countrys history while stock exchange had crossed 12000 points, he said, adding that the exports had crossed Rs11 billion mark and would double by the end of current financial year. The prime minister said the farmer also prospered as he received good price of his produces. However, there is some pressure on our economy because of global recession, war on terrorism and recent flood, he admitted. Answering a question about the PML-Ns agenda, he said talks were underway with the Nawaz League, which was satisfied with the progress. He said the government was facing an uphill task of rehabilitating over 20 million citizens affected by floods, adding that various measures were taken to achieve the aim. Gilani lamented that the people did not exhibit trust in the government, but at the same time, the Prime Minister Relief Fund received Rs6.5 billion donations, adding that the accumulated loss stood at $10 billion. Answering a question on the killing of three Pakistanis by the US nationals in Lahore, he said the government had condemned the incident while it was being investigated by the Punjab government. This issue is in court and the court will decide it. I cant comment until the Punjab governments report is submitted, he added. Earlier, Gilani held separate meetings with the delegations of District Bar Association Multan, local chambers of commerce of Multan and DG Khan, and cotton ginners association at the Circuit House. He said the financial stability of the country was subject to political stability in the country for which the government opted for political reconciliation and dialogue to resolve all problems. He reiterated the resolve ensure uplift of all sectors, including agriculture and said the government was aware of the problems related to cotton procurement being faced by the textile industry.
