Tyre of Malik's plane bursts

LAHORE Director General Civil Aviation Authority has ordered an inquiry into the incident that took place at Allama Iqbal International Airport on Sunday wherein the tyre of special plane carrying Interior Minister Rehman Malik burst, sources in CAA confided to TheNation. They said that the incident occurred when the said plane landed at AIIAP on Sunday, however the plane remained under control and was stopped without any further damage. A preliminary inquiry was made at the AIIAP and statement of the pilot was recorded by the CAA authorities. Helping devices have also been taken into custody to help in the further probe. An initial report in this regard has been sent to the President House immediately, sources said. A team of Inspectors of Safety Investigation Board of CAA would arrive on Monday (today) for further investigation, said the sources, adding that though the minister was in a hurry to get inquiry done immediately, the CAA would have to adopt a procedure keeping in view the international standards of inquiry, as per rules. An aviation expert seeking anonymity said that there could be two main reasons behind the bursting of the tyre: (i) Pilots fault wherein he made hard landing or applied excessive brakes; (ii) a fault with a defective anti-skid braking system. He said that a final decision would be taken after proper investigation. APP adds: Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti was also on the plane. A CAA spokesperson told APP all the four passengers remained unscathed as the pilot controlled the plane. He said the runway had been cleared for air traffic.
