Media-shy Shoaibs earn PCB's nod for selection

LAHORE Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and all-rounder Shoaib Malik refused to give fitness test in front of the probing eyes of media here on Wednesday raising questions about the level of their fitness. The two players came to the National Cricket Academy to make their case for their selection in the team for the Asia Cup and the England tour but the presence of media irked the two and they refused to undergo fitness test raising doubts about their fitness. Even the Pakistan Cricket Board was trying to justify the selection of the controversy-prone fast bowler and the all-rounder by supporting their stance. Upon their refusal to give fitness test in front of media, the PCB also directed the media to leave the academy. The selection of both the players for the Asia Cup depends upon fitness test. However, the fitness test of both the players was held later and reports said that Akhtar bowled 12 overs to show his rhythm while Malik also gave his test. The fitness test report will be revealed before the selection committee and the chairman will be the sole authority. But reports said that the officials monitoring the fitness of the players were satisfied about their fitness and that means they have passed the first hurdle for their selection. Chairman PCB Ijaz Butt, Chief Selector Mohsin Khan, Captain Shahid Afridi and Chief Coach Waqar Younis monitored the players performance. The selection committee will be meeting today (Thursday) and after consultation with the captain and the coach, they will announce the team with the consent of the chairman. Talking to journalists, chief selector Mohsin Khan said that the selection committee members also watched the fitness test of the players and they will announce the team after discussing with the coach and the captain and the final list will be presented to the chairman for approval. He further said that the likely chance is that the team will be announced for the Asia Cup and the team for the England tour will be named later. Shoaib Malik has not played for Pakistan since February this year. Malik was banned for one year in March this year but PCB appellate tribunal overturned the ban last week. Malik married Indian tennis queen Sania Mirza in April this year. Shoaib Akhtar last played for Pakistan in May last year at UAE but was not available for selection due to his fitness problems. Shoaib Akhtar had a knee surgery last year and he has now recovered from the injury as he bowled decently in the domestic one day tournament in April. Shoaib Akhtars name was also engaged with Indian film actress Diya Mirza last month but both eventually denied any such relationship. The PCB recently constituted an inquiry committee to probe the poor performance of the team in Australia and on the recommendation of that committee, it banned and fined seven players of the team and Malik was one of them. And after pressure from the unknown circles, it lifted the ban of Malik and halved the fine. As of Akhtar, he performed in just one match of domestic cricket and was named in the camp probables and as reports say, the two are among the 15 short-listed players waiting for the approval of the chairman. Yousuf urges PCB to raise match fees for Tests Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf has asked the Cricket Board (PCB) to raise the Test match fees or face the possibility of a further slump in the rankings of the games five-day version. Yousuf told the inquiry committee of the PCB, constituted few months back to probe the national teams disastrous tour of Australia, that Pakistan was facing a shortage of quality Test players. The truth is we dont have enough quality Test players. We are now just good at Twenty20 cricket. We are not producing players who are technically strong and capable of playing long innings, Yousuf said in a leaked video recording of the proceedings held earlier this year. Nowadays the players are only interested in playing ODIs or T20 matches. And why not when a player can earn between 200,000 to 300,000 rupees for one ODI or T20 match, whereas he gets only 250,000 rupees for a Test match, he argues. The board must raise the Test match fees immediately to crate interest among the players and offer them appropriate financial compensation for playing Tests compared to limited overs matches, he said. Yousuf himself was indefinitely banned by the inquiry committee for his failed captaincy on the Australian tour, which later forced him to announce his retirement from international cricket in protest. The former skipper was also critical of the standards of Pakistani Test players. The fielding was also atrocious and one of the main reasons we lost the series. We should never have lost the Sydney Test but we couldnt even chase down a target of 172 runs. You tell the players to play carefully and selectively and next ball they are playing a loose shot and throwing away their wickets, Yousuf had told the committee. They dont have Test match temperament, he added.
