Aqeel, Sara win National Clay Court Tennis titles



ISLAMABAD - Top seed Aqeel Khan thrashed M Abid in straight sets to lift the 9th Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship crown here at Senator Dilawar Abbas Tennis Complex on Friday.
Aqeel completely dominated the youngster Abid and won the first set 6-3. He used his powerful serves and baseline shots to outclass Abid in the second set and won it by 6-1, thus winning the men’s singles final 6-3, 6-1. Aqeel bagged Rs 40,000 cash along with the trophy while runner-up Abid got Rs 25,000 and trophy.
In the boy’s u-14 final, Syed Nofil Kaleem Imam rewrote history as he clinched 10th juniors title in a row by beating second seed M Muzammil in the final 6-2, 6-4.
In the ladies singles final, a classic match was witnessed between Sara Mansoor and Iman Qureshi. Iman last night made upset by thrashing top seed Saba Aziz in the semi-final and she took her brilliant form in the final too and won the first set 7-6 (2) on tiebreak. Sara fought back well in the second set and won the set 6-3. She proved too good for Iman in the decider won with ease by 6-2 to seal the fate of the championship.
Ahmed Babar became the new boys’ u-18 clay court champion as he defeated top seed M Mudasar in the final by 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to lift the title with cash prize of Rs 12,000 and trophy. A total of Rs 250 million were disbursed among the players. PTF Patron Senator Syed Dilawar Abbas, PTF president Syed Kaleem Imam, OPF Boys College principal Brig (retd) M Asif and OPF Girls College principal Shahina Masood graced the occasion as chief guests.
