LAHORE - M Sagar of Bangladesh and Ghazala Yasmin of Garrison Golf Club emerged as the golf champions for the year 2013 after winning 52nd Amateur Golf Championship of Pakistan which concluded here at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course on Sunday.
Sagar was consistent all through the final round and though he was behind the overnight leader Taimur Khan at the start of the final day, yet he lunged ahead early in the day and from thereon, he maintained his lead without getting challenged by any of his rivals. Sagar was all praise for the golf course and said: “The course is fantastic and I loved it and will remember the fairways excellence."
In the ladies section, Ghazala managed to retain her title. Her hard work has paid off and she has started to look unbeatable. Her score of gross 240 for three rounds is 14 strokes better than her nearest rival Ami Qin. Tehmina Ahmed of Gymkhana came third with a score of gross 261.
Sardar Murad, Taimur Khan and Naeem Khan could not press their way to victory and had to be contented with positions other than the first. However, the experience of this sharp edged competition has brought forth names like Taimur and Naeem and Murad who are going to be in national reckoning from now on.
After his poor showing in the first round, Ali Hai of Karachi recovered with considerable authority and with superb showing on the second, third and fourth days and secured the runners-up position and along the way on the final, he capped his effort with a hole in one on the par-3, 17th hole.
As for the other results, Sardar Murad won the first net prize, followed by Waleed Zubair who came second. Earlier, Sindh team won the Inter Association Team title with Punjab team being the runners-up.
