Pirzada blasts PTF for Davis Cup thrashing

ISLAMABAD - Munir A Pirzada, the former national tennis champion from 1959 to 1963, while talking exclusively to TheNation on Sunday expressed his deep regret and sorrow over Pakistan team's thrashing at the hands of South Korea in the Davis Cup Group II Asia/Oceania tie and blamed the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) President Syed Kaleem Imam for appointing a women volleyball coach to train the Davis Cup squad. Jalil Riaz, the coach neither play a single set with Aqeel Khan during the training camp held at PAF nor meet Aisam who reached South Korea directly from London only four days before the crucial tie. He further said Jalil Riaz was upbeat about Pakistan team chances and promised to score historic victory against South Korea but team failed to do so. Pirzada further said during his time as secretary PTF from 1991 to 1995, he always followed the rules and never wasted a single penny on so-called foreign coaches. He relied on local coaches who achieved satisfactory results in the past and training camps of the Davis Cup ties were never shorter than a month to enable boys to gain rhythm. Pirzada criticised the hiring of third rated US baseball coach and said that the PTF has wasted a huge sum. Pirzada was of the view that despite having great local coaches like Rashid Malik, Hameedul Haq, who is still playing tennis at the age of 50, Mushaf Zia, another former Davis Cupper who guided Pakistan team to Davis Cup victory against Hong Kong in the earlier match under his coaching. Jalil Riaz was only brought to entertain blue-eyed persons as he is a very close friend of Kaleem's buddy, he alleged. He further said, that this new PTF management, which took over PTF in November 2010, in eight months has brought tennis to its lowest ebb in the country with their self-styled policies. The secretary of the PTF never turn up to the office and violated International Tennis Federation's instructions regarding the presence of secretary to remain in office and available to all. It is worth-mentioning here that Pirzada played singles main draw at Wimbledon in 1956 and lost in the second round which is a fact hidden from many countrymen who thought Aisam was the first Pakistani to achieve this feat but the matter of fact is Pirzada had done this well before. Pirzada also revealed that there is a lot of confusion regarding the PTF complex land, the fact is this 76 canals of land was approved by Fareed-u-din on his recommendation and he was there when the agreement was signed between him and ex-chairman CDA in 1993. The land was allotted for initially a period of 33 years and extendable to 99 years. The rent of this land was decided at 25 paisas per yard yearly which is around Rs 10,500 annually. The agreement further said the rate of the rent per year will never be enhanced or raised in that 33 year duration. Pirzada wanted to know from the PTF bosses who is going to play Davis Cup and other important fixtures for the country in future as he sees no back up whatsoever and these aging players Aisam and Aqeel how long will take this burden, which is going to replace them. But future of tennis in the country and specially at international level is looking bleak, he said.
