ISLAMABAD - Second seed Roshna Mahboob beat top seed Zoya Khalid 3-2 to clinch the KPK Women National Squash Championship 2013 title.
Roshna won the first two games with utmost ease and was looking confident to complete a routine victory. She won the first game 11-9 and outclassed Zoya in the second as well by 11-3. But when it matters most, Zoya bounced back and won the two games in a row with 11-9 and 14-12 and leveled the score. At that point, Zoya was hot favourite to win the title. But Roshna returned with fighting spirit and brushed aside Zoya in the fifth game winning it 11-3 thus clinched the title.
Talking to The Nation, head coach Jamshed Gul lauded Roshna Mahboob for winning the prestigious title. He said: “I strongly recommend female players to groom and get trained along with male players as the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) is seriously thinking on lines to buck up females and send them abroad to appear in international events.”
He added that conducting female events was a very positive sign which would help girls prepare for the mega events like Asian Games, Common Wealth and Asian Team Championship. “I have been monitoring girls like Roshna, Sammer Anjum, Sadia Gul, Madina sisters and Riffat Khan and I am quite confident that with proper training and mental toughness, they can bring laurels for the country,” Jamshed concluded.
