KARACHI - National junior selection committee chairman and ex-Test batsman Basit Ali has said that focused coaching can play a vital role in quick grooming and nurturing of young talent.
"If U-16 cricketers pay proper heed to their coaches' guidance and advice, they can get places in the sport," he said while speaking at a reception held here at the National Stadium hosted in honor of teams from Quetta, Larkana, Hyderabad and Karachi featuring in the PCB Pepsi U-16 Cricket Tournament.
"Discipline in all areas of the game can lead you to Pakistan team in coming years. If you really worked hard we may be able to see future stars like Hanif Muhammad, Mushtaq Muhammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, Inzamamul Haq, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younus from amongst you," Basit Ali, who is also Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) consultant from Zone-I said and added: "You are future of Pakistan cricket because cricketers emerged from this programme."
He said basic purpose of hosting this dinner reception was to allow interaction of the teams with other players and to develop bond with them.
Former Test fast bowler Saleem Jaffar told the U-16 cricketers, that this was the best platform launched by PCB for preparing future cricketers in 2007. He expressed the confidence that some of these promising boys would join domestic first class if they showed passion and dedication to the game.
Another former Test off-spinner Touseef Ahmed recalled his long association with Under16 cricketers and appreciated Basit Ali for holding such a programme.
Captains and managers of the teams on the occasion also expressed their gratitude to the host for honoring them and providing them rostrum to talk to media. Captains of the participating teams were also presented bouquet.
Former Test batsman Azam Khan, senior manager National Stadium Arshad Khan, panel of coaches comprising Tahir Mehmood, Asim Rizvi, Shaukat Miraz, Iqbal Imam, Aamir Iqbal, former first class cricketer Shoaib Habib were also present on the occasion.
