Pizza Hut Open Ranking Tennis rolls into action

KARACHI As many as nine matches in the qualifying round of the 6th Pizza Hut Open Ranking Tennis were decided on the opening day of the championship which began here Friday at Beach View Club DHA with enhanced prize money. For the first time in six years, the sponsors have increased the prize money in the competition offering bigger prizes in the mens singles event in which all the top national stars located in the city are taking part. The Sindh Tennis Association is organising the championship as part of its development programme. Sindh is the only affiliated unit of the Pakistan Tennis Federation which fulfils the constitutional requirement of organising events to keep intact its voting rights at the PTF. Out of the 14 affiliated units, who have full voting rights, as many as 12 do not hold any national level events yet these units have retained their voting rights despite breaching the constitutional clause. However, these bodies have not been disfranchised only to keep the vote bank intact. Only two walkovers were recorded in the mens qualifying round. Ahmed Rashid failed to appear in his scheduled match against Jahanzaib Khan who was declared winner. Khadim Hussain awarded walkover to his opponent Ahmed Ali. The qualifying rounds have been set for one set. Results: Mens singles first qualifying round: MZ Khatak beat Sufyan Alvi 8-4, Jahanzaib Khan w/o Ahmed Rasheed, Faraz Mir beat Arshad Shahid 8-2, Ahmed Ali w/o Khadim Hussain, Basit Gabol beat Ahsan Mehmood 8-2, M Essa Jee beat Ahmer Ahsan 8-4, Saeed Azher beat Nadir Ali Shah (Larkana) 8-1. Mens singles second qualifying: Jahanzaib Khan beat MZ Khatak 8-4, Hamza Pataudi beat Ahmed Ali 8-0, Basit Gabol beat M Essa Jee 8-4. Juniors u-17 singles qualifying: Haresh Das beat Rabiuddin 8-2.
