Foreign coach an elusive affair for Pak hockey team

ISLAMABAD Ministry of Sports and Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) could not agree naming a foreign coach for the national hockey team, as the officials of the bodies met here at Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) on Thursday for one hour. The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Sports Aamir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Lal Chand, President PHF Qasim Zia, Secretary PHF Mohammad Asif Bajwa, Director General PSB Amir Hamza Gillani and Secretary Ministry of Sports. After holding debatable sitting with the PHFs officials, Sports Minister told reporters that the ministry asked PHF officials to provide details about the coach including salary package, selection criteria and other perks before taking any final decision. We discussed all the aspects regarding the selection of national hockey coach, he added. Foreign coach should be with the national squad as local coaches could not produce acceptable results in the international competitions in past. However, we asked the PHF to produce further information about the qualification and international rating of the foreign coaches. The coach will be finalized in next couple of days, he maintained. The minister said that the executive committee of the PHF had powers to make any decision including hiring the services of an overseas coach for national team. However, the Ministry of Sports is bound to reply the questions of Parliamentarians in Senate and National Assembly and we will also contribute to the salary of coach that is why the PHF is consulting with the Ministry of Sports, he asserted. On this occasion, president PHF Qasim Zia, who is also member of Punjab Assembly, said that a large number of executive committee members were in favour of hiring an international coach for the national hockey team. We are negotiating with some foreign coaches of Holland and Germany and final decision will be made in the upcoming days, he viewed. Responding to a question he said that Pakistan had only three international qualified coaches including Tahir Zaman, Qamar Ibrahim and Mohammad Asif Bajwa. He further said that the federation had to consult with the government before taking any big decision because the government helps PHF overcoming the financial challenges. A professional coach always gets mammoth salary package and we have to request the Ministry of Sports to support us, the former Olympian said. Replying a question regarding the first Anti-Doping Seminar, which was held here at a local hotel, Aijaz Jakhrani said that Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) and all national sports federations would be bound to follow the rules and play their active role in dealing with doping issue.
