PSB training camps to be shifted from Quetta

ISLAMABAD The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has backed down from its decision of holding national training camps in Quetta. Volleyball coach Augusto Sabbtini from Brazil has also refused to train the players in Balochistan due to security issues. Earlier, top officials of the board had decided to hold the training camps for volleyball and karate players at Quetta without consulting their respective sports federations and without analysing the security situation of the venue. However, they have to take their orders back and now, the camps will be arranged here. Already some camps are getting under way at Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi since May 1 for the 19th Commonwealth Games and 16th Asian Games, which are scheduled to take place at New Delhi, India from October 3 to 14 and at Guangzhou, China, from November 12 to 27 respectively this year 2010. A source told TheNation on Monday that athletics, baseball and taekwondo camps were going on here at Pakistan Sports Complex. Judo and tennis camps will also be assembled in Islamabad soon. The tennis camp will be held at PTF Tennis Complex. Boxing and swimming camps will be organised in Karachi, he said. He further said that kabaddi and wrestling camps had started at Lahore but volleyball and karate teams were not interested in visiting Quetta for training camp. National volleyball coach Augusti Sabbtini refused to go to Quetta with national spikers and the PSB has to reverse his decision, he added. The source said that PSB could not plan properly for the national camps. We could stage the national camps at Quetta with national coaches after giving a comprehensive training plan as well as security plan to make it work, he viewed. Later, an official of Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) told this scribe that PVF had requested Pakistan Sports Board to shift camp from Quetta to Islamabad. Spikers will remain busy in various national volleyball events. National junior will start from May 17 at Lahore, WAPDA inter-department from May 20 while Inter-Services has been kicked off from May 17 at Peshawar, he added.
