Pakistan beat Thailand by 13 runs in opener

ISLAMABAD Pakistan thrashed Thailand by 13 runs in the opening match of the Asia Baseball Cup here at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex on Wednesday. Sparkling performance by Arif Khan put the hosts in the driving seat right from the start of the nine per innings fixture. He hit four runs for his team. Pakistan amassed 16 runs in seven innings as Iftikhar also hit a home run. Thai team could score just three runs in seven innings and match was concluded after seven innings owing to get an unbeatable lead by green shirts. Pakistan will take on Afghanistan in their second match on Thursday (today) at the same venue. President Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Lt Gen (retd) Syed Arif Hasan graced the opening ceremony as a chief guest. Director General POA Major (retd) Muhammad Afzal, secretary Pakistan Baseball Federation (PBF) Khawar Shah and other officials were also present on the occasion. Earlier, it was decided by the organising committee to hold the match under the lights but available lights were not sufficient to play baseball in the night. Now, all matches will be played in day lights. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan, Hong Kong, Afghanistan and Thailand are participating in the five-day international baseball event.
