LAHORE - The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Monday once again put faith in former wicketkeeper batsman Moin Khan’s abilities by awarding him two major responsibilities of national team’s chief selector and manager while legendry cricketer Zaheer Abbas was appointed as principle advisor to board chairman.
Talking to this scribe, PCB spokesman said that Moin had been given his new role after his department Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) allowed him to join the board on deputation.
Moin recently served as head coach of the national team which partook in the recent Asia Cup and the World Twenty20 tournaments and was expected to take over his new role immediately. The chief selector’s role was vacant after former wicketkeeper batsman and Test captain Rashid Latif withdrew after a fallout with the board, before even assuming charge of the office.
Moin Khan said: “I will make sure there’s no compromise on merit. I am thankful to the PCB for posing confidence in me.”
The cricket board has assigned Moin the task of picking a selection committee in consultation with the PCB. The intensive training camp for national players will be held in the coming days and Moin will shortlist the players for the camp.
The PCB has not had a full time selection committee for 10 months after Iqbal Qasim decided not to renew his contract and since then, it have been served by an interim committee.
Moin succeeded in getting major responsibility after Najam Sethi took charge of the cricket board as PCB chairman with full powers as in his earlier tenure as PCB interim committee chairman, he was not given full authority to take decisions of the board but this time with full powers, Sethi took a lot of major decisions and the appointment of Moin and Zaheer is one of the major decisions among them. Now next will be appointment of national team coaches.
The PCB has also set up a committee to scrutinise and evaluate the applications for various positions that include head coach, batting coach, fielding coach, spin bowling consultant, strength and conditioning coach and sports physio. The committee includes Moin Khan, Director Domestic Cricket Intikhab Alam and Director Game Development Haroon Rashid. The committee is set to evaluate the applications and present it to the PCB chairman after May 5, which is the cut-off date.
