Saba clinches UBL Int’l Tennis ladies crown


KARACHI - Saba Aziz clinched the ladies singles title of the UBL International Hard Court Tennis Championships here on Friday.
Saba beat Maheen Dada of Karachi in straight sets without conceding a single game 6-0, 6-0. She was in excellent form and kept her opponent on the run throughout the match with her powerful drives. Maheen was erratic and made number of unforced errors at the crucial stages. Saba received Rs 70,000 as winner’s prize along with trophy whereas Maheen pocketed Rs 35,000 as runner-up.
Men’s singles final will be played today (Saturday) between top seed Aqeel Khan and Abid Mushtaq who eliminated second seed Yasir Khan in the semis.
Third seed Syed Zohair Raza of Karachi won the junior Under-18 title by beating second seed Adil Kohari who retired in the first set complaining pain in the elbow.
Zohair built the winning lead 2-0 by breaking first game of Adil and enhanced his lead 5-0 by breaking third and fifth game. Adil was feeling severe pain in his elbow and was not in position to continue the match and finally retired from the match.
Top seed Rashid Malik and Hamidul Haq won the veteran’s title by eliminating Nauman Aleem and Imran Ahmed in straight set 6-2, 6-1. Aqeel Khan and Yasir Khan won the men’s double title beating unseeded Saad Balouch and Dr Umar Qazi in a well-contested two-set match 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Top Pakistan tennis star Aisamul Haq Qureshi will grace the occasion as a guest of honour on the men’s singles final today (Saturday). President United Bank Limited Atif Riaz Bokhari has very kindly accepted to be the chief guest and will distribute prizes among the winners.
