ISLAMABAD - Former captain Zaheer Abbas said on Tuesday that the appointment of Najam Sethi as interim Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief was a ‘good omen’ for country's cricket. “Sethi is a wise man and I believe he can put cricket back on track in Pakistan," Zaheer told APP.
Zaheer said he was happy that at a critical moment in the country's cricket, a sensible man was given the responsibility to look after the PCB affairs.  To a question that some critics had lashed out at Sethi's appointment on the grounds that he was not a cricketer, he said: “If we remain indulged in such controversies then Pakistan cricket will never improve. The performance of Pakistan team has not been up to the mark for quite some time and we need an efficient man to improve the things," he added.
Zaheer, known as Asian Bradman as his avarice for runs matched to that of Australian legend, said that for him the most important thing was that cricket should improve in Pakistan.
He said although Sethi had been appointed an interim PCB chief yet during his stint, he could take measures that could have lasting effects in Pakistan cricket. "I am sure his appointment is going to benefit Pakistan cricket a lot. I am hopeful honest, sincere and capable people will come forth to serve the nation," Zaheer added.
He said Sethi's announcement to not obstruct in selection matters was also commendable. "The acting PCB chief, in unequivocal terms, has made it clear that he will not interfere in selection of the team but in return, they will have to take responsibility for defeats. This is a strong message for the selectors as they will have to be careful in selecting team. I wish him best of luck," he said.
