LAHORE All-rounder Shahid Afridi has been named captain of the Pakistan team for all the three formats of the game for the coming Asia Cup and the Test series in England. Afridi, who is captain of the Pakistan T20 team, will now also be captain of the one-day and Test teams as well. The PCB decided to make him captain after he met the chairman, who will lead the national side in the Asia Cup during England tour. He will lead the team in Tests as he got the governing board approval. Afridi ended self-exile from the Test cricket which he announced in 2006 owning to family commitment and to concentrate on the limited-overs game. The PCB is also expected to name 30 players for a camp training for the preparation of the team for Asia Cp and the England tour and most likely Afridi will be given a 16-member team for the coming series. Pakistan will first travel to Sri Lanka to play in the Asia Cup and then to England where they will first take on Australia in a two match test home series that was split in two phases last year with ODIs already played in UAE and that will be followed by a full test match series against England. For the series against Australia, Pakistan had to shift the series to a neutral venue due to security concerns at home, which has been keeping the foreign teams away from Pakistan for the last couple of years. Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board Ijaz Butt said that Afridi will lead the team in all three formats in the Asia Cup and the English tour. He said: Afridi had the confidence of all players and the World Twenty20 played in the West Indies is the proof of their reliance of him and that is the reason he is made the captain now. It is a quality of a captain that he fosters cooperation and good relations among the players while following the rules and regulations of the game and Afridi has done all that, said Butt. He said that the names of the 30 players playing in the English tour will be announced in the upcoming meeting. The training camp for the preparation for the series will start from June 1 in Lahore. The Asia Cup will be played from 15th June to 25th June in Sri Lanka. The series against Australia and England will be played between July and August. The chances are that Younus Khan, Shoaib Malik and one of the most controversial lad of Pakistan cricket Shoaib Akhtar would also make the 30 players of the camp training. The reason being that as reports suggested Afridi was asked by the chairman whether he had any problems accepting Younus and Malik back in the team and he said he was fine with their presence in the Test side. Yawars presence indicates how influential a role he is wielding these days in the cricket affairs because he was the one who convinced Afridi to make himself available for the Tests as well, a report said. After their meeting, Afridi and Butt went into a discussion with the national selection committee at the Gaddafi stadium for the finalisation of the names of 30 probables for the Asia Cup and England tour. Meanwhile, Former captain, Younis Khan, who on Tuesday left for England to play for county Surrey until mid-July, is expected to be named in the probables for the England tour. Fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar is also expected to be recalled in the short list of players. Pakistan after the Asia Cup also feature in four T20 internationals and five one-dayers on the tour of England.
