Army, PAF, Wapda win volleyball matches

SAID ALAM KHAN PESHAWAR - Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force and Wapda won their respective volleyballs matches while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Wapda defeated their rivals in women table tennis event. Police Women Netball team outclassed Baluchistan in the very first day matches of the 31st National Games being played in Peshawar. A number of sports events took place in and out side of the Qayyum Sports Complex. A large number of sports lovers and spectators witnessed these matches and clapped for well performance of the players. Volleyball: Three matches were played in the first match Wapda defeated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 25-17, 26-24 and 25-16. In the second match, Army defeated Police team by 25-21, 25-15 and 25-12 and in the third match of the day PAF stunned Navy by 25-21, 25-23 and 25-18. The matches were played at the PSB. Football: The first match was between Navy and Railways, which the former won by 3-1 goals against the latter. The second match remained draw between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PAF by 1-1. In Netball (women) event, Pakistan Police women team defeated Balochistan by3-0 while Sindh team defeated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team by 23-6.The matches were held at Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Sports Complex. In other matches Punjab defeated Pakistan Wapda by 31-23 while Pakistan Army won the match by defeating Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by 44-20. Squash: Amir Atlas and Farhan Zaman of Wapda defeated their opponents. The matches were played at Hashim Khan PAF Squash Complex. Amir Atlas won his game by defeating Hamza Bukhari of Punjab while Farhan Zaman defeated his rival Murtaza of Balochistan. Safeerullah of PAF won his game by defeating Saifullah Kakar of Balochistan. Waqar Mehboob of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa defeated Sindh player Azam Khan while his brother Farhan Mehboob defeated Aurangzeb of Punjab. Table Tennis: Wapda and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa table tennis teams dominated on the fist day by defeating its rivals Islamabad and Punjab. The matches were played at the Pakistan Sports Board Coaching Center. The Wapda team was consisting of Loiza, Ayesha Iqbal and Mehmooda, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's team players were Farzana, Zainab and Shumaila Tajik. Punjab's team comprising Aysha Javid, Alia and Iqra and Islamabad's Nosheen, Ayesha Sadiq and Shumaila. Wapda beaten Islamabad by 3-0, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa defeated Punjab by 3-2, while Wapda won against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by 3-0, Islamabad outclassed against Punjab by 3-1, Wapda-Punjab-3-0, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Islamabad-3-1. Participant satisfied over security arrangements: Meanwhile, players and officials participating in the 31st National Games expressed satisfaction over facilities provided to them and security measures taken to avert any untoward incidents by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, most of the players especially from Sindh said that they were not accustomed to the cold weather that's why they suffer while playing in this mega sports gala. Hailing from Karachi, Sundas Salam Khan, Asian Gold Medalist in Ju Jitsu said that they had a fear in mind what they had heard about the law and order situation in Peshawar, but seeing it by themselves the situation was different as extra ordinary security arrangements had been taken, she said this while Talking to The Nation here on Sunday. Team manager Syeda Asra Hussain said that it was her first trip to Peshawar. "Cold weather in Karachi is rare. Thus, we are not only enjoying the games but also the weather" she said. The people are nice. The accommodation is nice, she remarked. Flanked by Judo and Karate players-Safa Khan, Iman Riaz, Arfa, Farah Khurram, Madiha Hameed Khan, they said that everything was fine. All sort of facilities are availing in this sports complex, which they said was tremendous. They, however, said their parents were not allowing them to participate in the events, just because of the day-to-day bomb blast and the poor situation. But, "We convinced our parents that if the government is committed to hold such a mega event, then, it obviously the situation is better". The security is too tight even we are not allowed to go out from the Stadium. Lauding the efforts made by the organizers, they were of the view that they have done a good job as organizing such a big event in the prevailing situation is a great achievement, they added and said they would tell others that people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are peaceful, lovers and like sports Seema, coach of Sindh Women Table Tennis team said that her player were suffering while playing in such a cold season here in Peshawar. She, however, said that she was confident that her players would certainly grab medals in the event. Sports vital to promote peace: Meanwhile, Baluchistan's Sports Minister Mir Shahnawaz Marri said on Sunday that sport is vital to promote peace in the prevailing unrest in the country. Talking to journalists in Media Centre at Qayyum Sports Complex, he said that there was need to work together for the promotion of sport, which would help discouraging militancy. "Sport is a tool which can play a positive role to eliminate militancy and uncertainty that the country is facing these days. I think sport will be fruitful in restoration of peace". The Federal Government should facilitate provinces in holding National Games as well as Inter-Provincial Games, as it would be hard enough for them to organize such mega sports galas without the support and assistance of it, he added. It is a good omen that in the prevailing unrest was hosting the 31st National Games. No doubt that it was a big challenge, but so far the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had done well, Mr. Shahnawaz Marri remarked. He wished that Baluchistan should be given the opportunity to host coming 32nd National Games, as they had the best facilities for sports and players, he informed saying that his province has a number of players with international reputation. About the protest staged by players from Baluchistan about lacking facilities at the place where they were staying for National Games, Mr. Marri said that the protest was registered by the players not by the Government of Baluchistan. He, however, said that it was a mega event so giving accommodation to over 700 players and officials was a hard but not an impossible task. He said that complaints of the players from Baluchistan have been resolved for which he thanked the host Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government adding that instead of making complaints, the players should exhibit sportsmanship.
