Saba wins National Ranking Tennis

KARACHI - Saba Aziz won the ladies singles crown that included a purse of Rs 60,000 as winners prize in the NBP Subh-e-Nau National Ranking Tennis which concluded here on Sunday at the CDGJ Tennis Stadium. Saba, nationally ranked number two, overpowered unseeded Maheen Dada in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Thirteen year old Maheen could have earned a better score had she concentrated more on her court craft. Shahida Farooq chairperson Subh-e-Nau and tournament director Dr Farrukh Chisti gave away the prizes. Parents and friends of the participants attended the final played at countrys only tennis stadium which has been revived after a number of years. Maheens coach Qamar after the match believed the teenager had improved fast and hoped that by playing against better opponents she would learn fast how to convert a good rally into a point. Maheen earned Rs 30,000 as runners-up. This is the highest money that has been awarded in ladies and junior event. Cash awards were given in all the events. However, Maheen won girls under 18 final defeating Hania Naveed 6-0, 6-1. Maheen received Rs 20,000 and Hania got Rs. 15,000 in the junior event. Syed Zuhair Raza won boys under 18 title defeating Adil Kohari 6-4, 6-3. Zohair received Rs 25,000 while Koahri took 18,000 home. The highlight of the five day long championship which carried Rs. 300,000 was the final of boys under 14 final which a Japanese-born Pakistani Go Mazher won after a tense fight against Mudassar Murtaza 6-3, 7-6 in the final. Go Mazher, son of a Japanese mother and a Pakistani businessman father who is settled in Japan, is in Pakistan taking training from Mahboob Khan in Islamabad. This is his first appearance in a Pakistani competition and maiden victory. He received Rs 20,000 as winners prize.
