Maryam Nawaz not contesting elections

LAHORE - The prediction about Maryam Nawaz Sharif contesting the elections from Lahore proved false when she did not turn up at the Election Commission office on Sunday to file her nomination papers. Sunday was the last day fixed by the Commission for prospective candidates to file their papers, but neither she nor any one on her behalf appeared before the Returning Officer for the purpose. Earlier, there were strong indications that after Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, Maryam was also being groomed to play an important role in future politics.  It was also being said that she would contest the elections from Lahore. Be it lap top distribution ceremonies or extracurricular activities at educational institutions, Maryam was seem at almost every function as the chief guest. Media also gave her good coverage as an icon of future politics.Had the party allowed her to contest, she would have been another addition in the younger generation of Sharif family assuming a political role after Hamza Shahbaz. Her husband, Capt (Retd) Safdar, is already in politics. He is contesting the coming polls from Nowshera from a National Assembly constituency. He is an ex-MNA also.
